🏰 Destination guide

Scotland

Scotland trips here run Glasgow or Edinburgh as a city base and then one highland stretch: Skye, a loch, or a distillery day that is not five distilleries. Weather is a layering problem. The view shows up between showers, which is often enough.

Best time to visit

When to go, written in our own words. Highlighted months are the ones we would book first.

MonthWhat we would expect
JanDark, cold, and short. Cities work. Highland roads are a commitment.
FebSame winter, with a bit more light. Good rates, serious coats.
MarWindy spring. Daffodils and closed seasonal ferries on some islands. Check Skye plans.
AprBrighter and still quiet. A fine city month. Hills can still be brown.
MayLong light and the start of the busy trail season. One of the months to aim for.
JunPeak midges later in the month in the west. Beautiful, and bring the repellent.
JulBusy, mild, and midges. Edinburgh in festival weeks needs a room booked long ago.
AugFestivals and full hotels in the cities. The highlands are slightly calmer on weekdays.
SepMidges fade, light is still kind, and crowds thin. A favorite.
OctCooler and gold. Some attractions drop their hours. Stills a good driving month.
NovWet, windy, and dark by late afternoon. City whisky and museums over island ferries.
DecHogmanay in Edinburgh is its own trip. The rest of the country is quiet and cold.

Where to stay

Edinburgh, Old Town

The walkable base for a first city stretch. Loud in August. Perfect in May and September.

Glasgow

The trips that start here do it for the food and the train north, not for a castle checklist. One or two nights is the pattern.

Skye or the western highlands

A block of nights, not a day trip from Edinburgh. The drive is the day you arrive.

Questions people ask

Is August a good idea?

Only if the room is already booked. Festival Edinburgh is wonderful and full. The rest of the year is easier.

Car or train?

Train between the cities. A car once you leave for the highlands or Skye. Do not do both on the same day if you can help it.
