🇵🇹 Destination guide

Portugal

Portugal trips on TopVacay tend to string Lisbon to Sintra and then north toward Porto, with one slow day that is only a neighborhood and a long lunch. Trains do most of the work. A car is for the day you leave the cities.

Best time to visit

When to go, written in our own words. Highlighted months are the ones we would book first.

MonthWhat we would expect
JanMild and wet. Museums and miradouros, not beach days. Shorter lines.
FebStill rainy in bursts. Almond blossom inland. A good city month.
MarUnsettled spring. Lisbon is walkable. Sintra paths can be muddy.
AprWarm and green. One of the months we would book first.
MayLong light and comfortable heat. Book Sintra early; the palaces fill.
JunHot inland, breezy on the coast. Pastel de nata weather, which is all weather.
JulPeak heat and peak visitors in Lisbon. Start walks early.
AugHot and drier. Beaches are the point. Cities are better after 5.
SepThe sea is still warm and the cities calm down. A favorite shoulder.
OctGolden and mild. Some rain returns. Excellent for Porto and the Douro if you have a car for the valley.
NovCooler, wetter, and quiet. City food and tile museums over beach time.
DecChristmas lights in Lisbon and short days. Cozy, not a pool trip.

Where to stay

Lisbon, Alfama and Baixa

Hills, trams, and the restaurants the trips keep. Stay here when you want to walk to dinner. The hills are not a metaphor.

Sintra

A day, or one night if the first train of the morning matters. Palaces, woods, and a town that closes earlier than Lisbon.

Porto, Ribeira

The riverfront and the port lodges across the bridge. A second base on the longer Portugal trips, not a same-day add-on to Lisbon.

Questions people ask

Can we do Lisbon and Porto in one day each?

You can pass through. The trips that read well give each city at least two nights and treat Sintra as its own day.

Do we need a car?

Not for Lisbon, Sintra by train, and Porto by train. Rent one for the Douro or the Alentejo and drop it before you sleep in a hill neighborhood.

Where do the budget figures come from?

From the estimated totals on the public Portugal trips in this catalog, per person, per day. They move when those trips change, not when a hotel runs a sale.
