🍷 Destination guide

San Francisco & Napa

San Francisco and Napa, done well, is a city first and a valley day second. The trips that work sleep in the city for the museums and the food, then give the valley a full day with a driver or a careful plan. Tasting four vineyards and walking the Golden Gate on the same date is how nobody enjoys either.

Best time to visit

When to go, written in our own words. Highlighted months are the ones we would book first.

MonthWhat we would expect
JanCity rain and valley mud. Museums are the point. Vineyards are quiet.
FebSimilar, with mustard in the vineyards. Pretty and wet.
MarUnsettled. A good city month. The valley is green.
AprWarmer. Both halves of the trip work. A strong month.
MayMild and clear more often. Book the valley driver if you want one.
JunFog in the city, sun in the valley. Pack both a sweater and sunscreen.
JulBusy and bright. Valley hotels want a weekend minimum. Go midweek if you can.
AugWarm valley, crowded tastings. The city is nicer in the afternoon fog.
SepHarvest starting. A first-choice month if you care about the valley.
OctCrush and clear light. The other first-choice month. Book tastings.
NovRain returns. Fewer tastings open late. The city carries the trip.
DecWet and festive in San Francisco. The valley is an off-season drive.

Where to stay

San Francisco, the Mission or Hayes Valley

Food-first neighborhoods with a rideshare to the sights. Better evenings than a hotel on the highway to the bridge.

Fisherman’s Wharf, as a visit

Go for the ferry or the view. Sleeping there means tourist pricing and a long ride to dinner.

Napa or Sonoma town

One night if the tasting day should not end with a drive back to the city. Otherwise a day trip with a driver.

Questions people ask

Can we taste and drive?

Plan not to. The public trips that include several tastings assume a driver, a tour, or one modest stop. The valley roads are not a game.

How do we split the days?

Two or three in the city, one in the valley. More valley than that is a different vacation, and it should be booked as one.

Are the daily ranges from wine prices?

They are the spread of estimated cost per person per day on the public trips tagged to this destination, whole trip included.
