🚢 Destination guide

Mediterranean Cruise

A Mediterranean cruise week is a series of ports with one or two days you will actually remember. The trips here pick a few ports for a real excursion and leave the others as a walk off the ship. The embarkation city deserves a night before the boat, not a same-morning flight.

Best time to visit

When to go, written in our own words. Highlighted months are the ones we would book first.

MonthWhat we would expect
JanFew ships, cool ports, some museums on winter hours. A niche month.
FebStill quiet. Italy and Spain are walkable. Beaches are not the point.
MarShoulder sailings start. Windy decks. Good prices.
AprWarm enough for a port beach and not yet August. A smart month.
MayLong days and busy famous ports. Book the one excursion that needs a guide.
JunHot in the eastern ports. Crowded in Santorini and Dubrovnik. Go early ashore.
JulPeak heat and peak ships. Pretty, expensive, and a hat is not optional.
AugSame heat, slightly fewer families late in the month.
SepWarm sea and fewer ships than July. One of the two months we would pick.
OctCooler, golden, and some ports start to close seasonal sites. Still a strong choice.
NovWindy and quieter. Some beach clubs shut. Museums are calm.
DecHoliday sailings, higher fares, and ports dressed up. Book early or skip.

Where to stay

Barcelona or Rome, before the ship

Whichever city you embark from, sleep there the night before. A morning flight on embarkation day is how luggage misses the boat.

A tender port versus a dock port

Read the port notes. A tender day (you shuttle in small boats) eats the morning. Do not plan a long inland tour on a tender.

One beach port, not five

Pick a single port for the swim. Use the others for a town walk. The trips that try to swim everywhere spend the week in a taxi.

Questions people ask

How far inland is reasonable?

Ninety minutes each way is the edge. Farther than that and you are watching the clock instead of the place.

Do we book ship excursions or go alone?

Go alone in a port where the ship docks downtown and you can walk. Book the ship, or a timed return ticket, when the sight is far and the all-aboard time is unforgiving.

What do the daily numbers include?

The estimated cost per person per day on the public cruise trips in this catalog, not the cruise fare printed in an ad this morning.
