Washington, DC

The Mall museums are free and still take a full morning. Cherry blossom weeks are a crowd you plan for. Summer is hot, and the museums are the air-conditioned escape.

Best time to visit

When to go, written in our own words. Highlighted months are the ones we would book first.

MonthWhat we would expect
JanCold and quiet. A museum month, not a memorial-picnic month.
FebSame. The zoo is still a good morning.
MarBlossoms can start late in the month. Hotels notice the rumor before the trees do.
AprPeak blossoms and peak crowds. A month we would book if the room is already held.
MayWarm and walkable. School groups fill the popular doors.
JunHot. Two museums, then stop.
JulHotter. The free museums are the plan because they are indoors.
AugStill hot, slightly fewer school groups. Evenings on the Mall work.
SepA month we would book. Warm days, fewer holiday weekends early in the month.
OctThe other easy walking month.
NovCrisp. The museums stay the daytime plan.
DecMonuments at night are the pretty version. Holiday weeks book up.

Questions people ask

Are the Smithsonians really free?

Yes. Timed entry still shows up at some doors, and these plans assume you picked two museums, not six.

Do we need a car?

No. The Metro is the value plan. A car is a place to park, which these estimates do not include.
