🏝️ Destination guide

Cancún

Cancún is the airport and the hotel zone. The trips worth copying spend at least one day south: a ruin, a cenote, or Isla Mujeres. The beach day is the easy one. The planned day is the one you will remember.

Best time to visit

When to go, written in our own words. Highlighted months are the ones we would book first.

MonthWhat we would expect
JanDry, warm, and busy. A strong month if the room was booked early.
FebSame dry season, slightly quieter than Christmas week. Good water, good weather.
MarStill excellent. Spring break shows up late in the month in the hotel zone.
AprHotter and more humid. The sea is calm. Crowds ease after Easter.
MayHeat and the start of the rainy season. Afternoons can storm. Mornings are for the boat.
JunRainy and hot, and the cheapest weeks. Storms are usually short. Watch the forecast for a ferry day.
JulSimilar to June, with a real hurricane risk. Travel insurance earns its keep.
AugStill wet and still a bargain. Not the month for a tight one-day ruin plan.
SepRain tapering. Sargassum is a year-to-year question; ask the hotel, not a blog from last year.
OctWetter than winter, quieter than December. A reasonable shoulder.
NovDry season returning. Pleasant, and not yet holiday pricing.
DecPeak. Book the transfer and the popular ruin tour before you fly.

Where to stay

Hotel zone

The long sandbar of resorts. Stay here for an all-inclusive week and day trips that start from the lobby. You will not walk to a neighborhood.

Cancún downtown

Cheaper rooms and local food, with a bus or a taxi to the beach. Useful when the trip is more ruin than pool.

Puerto Morelos or the Riviera Maya

South of the airport, for a smaller beach and shorter drives to the ruins the public trips keep repeating.

Questions people ask

Do the trips stay inside the resort?

Some do, for a night or two. The ones that rank have at least one day at a ruin, a reef, or an island. The activity list on this page is counted from those days.

Is the sargassum predictable?

No. It moves by year and by beach. A hotel on the bay side of the hotel zone avoids the worst of it more often than an east-facing beach.

What does the daily budget mean?

It is the min, middle, and max of estimated spend per person per day across public TopVacay trips for Cancún, including the activities those trips actually list.
