🌵 Destination guide
Big Bend
About nine hours from Frisco to the park. The lodge is in the Chisos Basin. Summer heat is the constraint. This is not a backcountry permit story.
Best time to visit
When to go, written in our own words. Highlighted months are the ones we would book first.
| Month | What we would expect |
|---|---|
| Jan | Cold nights in the basin, mild days. A quiet month if the lodge is open. |
| Feb | Still cool. Good for the scenic drive. Pack a layer. |
| Mar | A month we would book. Wildflowers in a wet year, and heat that has not arrived. |
| Apr | The other spring month we would book. Book the lodge early. |
| May | Warming fast. Start drives early and carry water. |
| Jun | Hot in the desert. The basin is cooler than the river and still not mild. |
| Jul | The hot month. This plan is a dawn plan or a different month. |
| Aug | Same heat, plus storms. Do not count on a canyon walk. |
| Sep | Heat lingers. Late in the month is the better half. |
| Oct | A month we would book. Cooler nights and open roads. |
| Nov | Excellent walking weather. Nights in the basin are cold. |
| Dec | Quiet and cold at night. The Window View trail still works in the sun. |
By budget
The basin lodge and two easy days. A couple, not a stroller trip.
Typical budget
Per person per day, computed from 1 public TopVacay trip in Big Bend. Planning ranges from those itineraries, not a live quote.
Where to stay
Chisos Mountains Lodge is the only hotel in this plan. Services outside the park are a drive.
A scenic drive day with labeled stops, not a trail we are sending you down.

Questions people ask
Is there cell service?
Do not plan on it in the basin. The visitor center is the place to ask what is open.
Do we hike the Window pour-off?
No. The plan walks the paved Window View Trail and stops there.
